Governor Noem Inspects Oregon ICE Center With Right-Wing Figures

The South Dakota governor, acting as the DHS secretary, visited the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon on a recent weekday. On site, she saw firsthand a limited protest outside, which stands in stark contrast to the dramatic "encirclement" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Escorted by MAGA Personalities

The secretary was accompanied by a set of right-wing figures who were transported from the local airport to the facility in her motorcade. Her department has published escalating online posts showing federal personnel performing immigration raids and deploying crowd control measures at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Officers cleared the street outside the ICE office in the southern Portland area before the governor's appearance. Several protesters, featuring one wearing a costume of a bird and another as a sea creature, were kept at a distance.

Music was audible from a gathering spot nearby, with a refrain referencing the former president and allegations. One protester called out to a federal recorder documenting from the facility's roof, questioning whether the homeland security had been renamed the "propaganda department".

Media Access

Reporters from nonpartisan media organizations were also restricted to the security perimeter outside, while the conservative personalities in Noem’s entourage—three right-wing influencers—posted online posts of the Noem leading federal personnel in prayer inside, giving a pep talk, and advising a soldier of the Oregon National Guard to "Be ready".

Legal and Political Context

Noem has repeated the Trump's claims that the group of individuals—who have assembled in their dozens outside the office since June, including one in an inflatable frog costume—are "radicals" who have placed the office "under siege", making the use of federal troops critical.

But, on Saturday, a court official in the city prevented Trump’s effort to nationalize the state's guard, stating that the his assertions that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "untethered to the facts".

The next day, the same judge, the magistrate—who was nominated to the court by Trump—expanded her order to prohibit National Guard troops from elsewhere from being deployed in Portland. This occurred after Trump answered to her initial ruling by attempting to deploy members of the California National Guard to Oregon.

Rising Conflicts

Following Trump drew attention the small but persistent demonstration outside the site and made inaccurate statements that Portland is "in a state of war", a increasing amount of his supporters, including right-wing figures, have arrived to confront the protesters.

Some of these clashes have led to altercations and brawls, prompting arrests by the officers. One influencer was taken into custody after he tried to force his way a demonstration site on a sidewalk near the office and was part of an altercation over an U.S. flag. Sortor had before seized the banner from a demonstrator who was setting it on fire.

The charges against Sortor were subsequently withdrawn after an protest in right-wing outlets led the head of the legal unit of the Justice Department, Harmeet Dhillon, to warn of a probe of the law enforcement agency over alleged political bias.

Female protesters he was arrested for fighting with still have pending accusations.

Official Responses

On Sunday, Oregon’s governor, the governor, claimed government personnel in the site of trying to irritate the demonstrators by using excessive quantities of crowd control agents in a populated area and inviting conservative social media influencers to document the protesters from the top of the building. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," Kotek said.

Three of those conservative influencers were described in a official record last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "constantly return and provoke the protesters until they are assaulted or subjected to spray" and refuse "ongoing instructions from police to stay away from" the demonstrators.

Online Content

A conservative personality, a previous media worker who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being let go from his previous employer for plagiarism, published a clip of Governor Noem looking down from the upper level of the ICE facility at the limited number of individuals below, including an individual who wears a chicken costume to ridicule Trump. Johnson labeled the clip of Noem observing the peaceful setting below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

In spite of the disconnect between the claims from both officials that this facility is "encircled" from "homegrown extremists" and visible proof of a limited group of protesters in peaceful clothing, the influencers with the secretary continued to describe the demonstrators as threatening extremists.

Official Engagement

On site, the secretary also met with the law enforcement head, the chief, who has been depicted as "politically correct" in partisan press for permitting his officers to detain Sortor. In a online post on the meeting, the influencer asserted that the official had "supported violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Noem’s motorcade then left the facility past a handful of individuals on the street outside, including one wearing a bear wearing a hat.
