Teenager Found Deceased After False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead just days following being wrongly accused of taking the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
The young boy's parents found his remains in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The investigation heard how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Police Investigation
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the property was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains attracted online comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Impact
She explained that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the resident who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he needed, but denied removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The inquest heard from educational staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's family telephone and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they never receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior investigator informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his intent."
